Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous example of a double unguentarium meant for holding 2 different types of scented oils or kohl makeup, free-blown from translucent glass of a vibrant blue-green hue. The slender vessel bears a pinched base, a pair of cylindrical containers surrounded by trails of applied glass and capped with rolled rims, all flanked by twin rigaree handles. Attractive areas of silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence have formed across the vessel and elegantly accentuate its bright sea green color. Size: 2.9" W x 4.4" H (7.4 cm x 11.2 cm); 5.9" H (15 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

#157164
Condition
Loss of top handle and some losses to trails. Thicker side handle restored from new material. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
