Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. An interesting mace head of an intimidating form with a quintet of oblong spikes emanating in a radial pattern around the central, biconically drilled hafting shaft. The mottled beige-hued stone features attractive inclusions of sage and grassy green, light gray, and coppery brown. Mace heads were bound to the end of lengthy wooden poles and used on the battlefield as formidable weaponry. However, more elaborately carved examples like this were perhaps created as votive offerings for deceased individuals. Size: 4.2" L x 1.1" W (10.7 cm x 2.8 cm)
