Item Details
Description
[SLAVERY & ABOLITION]. UPTON & BOLLES, photographers. Ruins of Slave Quarters, Ft. George [Florida]. Jacksonville, FL: ca 1870s. Â
6 3/8 x 3 1/8 in. stereoview on cardstock mount (soiling, toning to image and mount, paper residue near right edge of print). Photographer's imprint and manuscript title on verso. A view of the remains of quarters previously used by the enslaved, likely at Kingsley Plantation, located on Fort George Island in Jacksonville. Â
The foundations of the quarters as well as the house, kitchen, and barn at Kingsley Plantation were constructed of cement tabby, which made them notably durable. The archeological evidence discovered within and around the cabins has provided researchers insight into African traditions among the enslaved residents. Â
