Description

Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Vicus culture, ca. 200 BCE to 600 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel of a spherical form with a round but relatively stable base and a stirrup-shaped handle arching between the conical spout and seated female figure. The woman surmounting the vessel's body presents nude with bent legs and a raised head with curved arms held to her jawline as if wailing into the sky. The integral whistle creates a haunting, two-tone sound when air is blown into the spout that is reminiscent of a horrifying scream, and the vessel body is decorated with black negative-resist motifs atop the russet ground. Size: 7.375" Diameter x 9.125" H (18.7 cm x 23.2 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

Condition

Repair to handle and both legs as well as restoration to tip of nose, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Loss to both of figure's ears as shown. One stable hairline fissure extending downwards from bottom of proper right foot. Abrasions and fading to original pigment, with encrustations across scattered areas, chips along spout rim, small areas of fire-darkening, and a few petite spalls scattered across the surfaces. Light remains of pigment throughout, and nice preservation to overall form. Whistle creates a haunting sound when air is blown into the spout.
