George William SOLTAU (1801-1884). Trout Flies of Devon and Cornwall. London & Plymouth: 1847. Octavo (7 1/4 x 4 7/8in; 184 x 124mm.). Pp. 100. 2 fine hand-colored lithographic plates (depicting 18 trout flies) by C. Risdon of Exeter after 'W.J.C.' , and 2 full-page diagrams. (Plates spotted, the first slightly scuffed producing light urface damage [see image], the second with a clean repaired tear just touching the imae area, clean tear to upper margin of pp.35/36 ). Original red cloth, covers bordered in blind, the upper cover titled in gilt (neatly recased, endpapers replaced). Provenance: A. Rumallo (inscription dated 1960 to verso of frontispiece). First edition: despite the title this engaging work also includes a short review of angling literature and what those authors said about salmon and trout fishing, dressings for 18 trout flies, fly fishing techniques for salmon and trout, casting, with an account of salmon fishing in Ireland.
