Description
This Ames model 1863 Dahlgren Navy bayonet is complete with scabbard and frog. Made by the Ames Manufacturing Co. of Chicopee, Mass. Built originally for the Plymouth/Whitneyville model 1861 musket for the US Navy. Only 1800 were ever produced; very rare. This one is complete with bayonet release button, D.R. cartouche on the pommel, and DR stamped at the ricasso. DR, Daniel Reynolds was the inspector at Ames for the U.S. Ordinance Dept. in 1863. The sheath is complete with frog. The Dahlgren has been largely reproduced today, but this one is the real deal. The release button is complete, functions, and carries the machinist #75 under the return spring. The grip is walnut framed in brass. Overall condition is very good, the scabbard is good but is delicate being an organic at 160 years old. The blade is marked at the ricasso right side: U.S.N. D.R. 1863, left side : AMES MFG. CO. CHICOPEE, MASS. This knife made for the Whitneyville 1861 musket, designed by Admiral John Dahlgren of the USS Plymouth.
