Description
Framed and matted COPY of a Circa mid-1800s picture of P.T. Barnum with a fake taxidermy FeeJee Mermaid. In 1842, P.T. Barnum ran an ad in newspapers about a FeeJee Mermaid which featured the torsos of beautiful women, which were completely different than the frightening taxidermy FeeJee Mermaid that he had on display. P.T. Barnum leased the taxidermy FeeJee Mermaid for display purposes from the son of Samuel Barrett Eades who purchased it in 1822 from the Dutch, who had acquired it during their trade with Japan in the early 1800s. Eades believed it to be a real taxidermy mermaid and sold his ship for $6,000 in 1822 to get the money to buy it. Historians believe it was the head of a juvenile monkey sewn to the back half of an aquatic animal as a joke by Japanese fishermen in the early 1800s. Framed art like this novelty item is perfect for taxidermy collectors looking for something to hang on the wall by their fish mount, antlers, sheds, bronze sculpture, buffalo mount, grizzly bear rug mount, polar bear rug mount, mountain lion mount, elk mount, moose
