South Asia, Northern India or Nepal, ca. 19th century CE. This is a fascinating paper and ink illustration or chart of a woman that notes the areas of the human body that relate to chakras with Devanagari script. The stylized woman is forward facing, nude except for a waist cloth and earrings - the vertical row from her neck to thighs are the 5 chakras, and other areas such as her upper arms, elbows, ankles, and knees are also labeled with script. Chakras are the parts of the body that are believed to help focus or center the mind during meditation and are a popular part of Tantric Hinduism and Buddhist beliefs, it is believed that these areas are energy channels that react to touch known as nyasa while ritualistic chants or mantras are preformed, and the ability to control this energy brought great strength. This chart may have been part of a manuscript or manual for meditative practice for devotees and yogis and is professionally mounted in a wooden display frame.
