Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A stunning textile that is tightly woven from natural cotton or camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of ochre yellow, beige, maroon, pink and black. The piece is comprised of a rectangular panel that contains an upper and lower register of abstract stepped black and beige patterns. At the center are 3 uniform birds, although stylized, they may represent some type of waterfowl - perhaps representing Muscovy duck - a species that has a characteristic bare patch of red skin around the eyes - much like these birds! All are facing the same direction enclosed within horizontal registers, and above a vertical row of fringe that alternate between maroon and yellow, each decorated with a stepped interlocking pattern ascending each tassel. This vibrant textile is mounted within a fabric-lined frame and is ready to be displayed! Size (textile w/ fringe): 10.5" W x 11.7" H (26.7 cm x 29.7 cm); (frame): 21.25" W x 22.25" H (54 cm x 56.5 cm)
