Description
Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A fine brass Buddha seated in a full lotus position upon a triangular pedestal and wearing a robe that drapes over his left shoulder. His hands form a teaching mudra gesture, the right hand held up with the index and thumb touching, the left-hand palm up with the thumb and index also forming a circle. The dharmachakra mudra evokes the wheel of Dharma and the first sermon Buddha preached after he attained enlightenment. This handsome Buddha has a characteristically serene visage- downcast eyes under gently arched brows, and long ears to represent the wealth of his previous life as Prince Gautama, as they have been stretched from wearing large earrings. Atop his head are coils of hair nodules that surround the base of his ushnisha, the pointed projection from the top of his head that symbolizes his newfound knowledge. The hollow cast statue is nearly entirely infilled with a brick material when this Buddha was part of a temple or shrine. Size: 14.5" L x 9.75" W x 17" H (36.8 cm x 24.8 cm x 43.2 cm)
