Description
Native American, North America, Pacific Northwest Coast, Alaska, Inuit, Punuk stage, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. This is a fine spear or harpoon head made from a sharpened and barbed piece of whale or walrus bone. The broad blade is slightly curved with a concave underside and a hole drilled though the butt end, just above the thick tang for securing to a pole with a cord. The narrow tip flattens and widens at the body with notches for lashing to a handle. A projectile of this size is ideal for hunting larger marine mammals such as seal and has developed a dark brown nearly black hue of the ages. Size: 6.4" L x 1" W (16.3 cm x 2.5 cm)
