Description
GENÃS CIRERA CASANOVA (Badalona, Barcelona, 1890 - Barcelona, 1970).
Blue blown glass vase, fire enamelled with marine scenes depicting boats with sails hoisted and birds swarming.
Signed.
Measurements: 22.5 cm (height); 14 cm (diameter).
GenÃs Cirera is the last of the great craftsmen dedicated to fire enamelled glass. He began this craft at the age of eleven, and from a very young age he won several prizes in national and foreign exhibitions, including the Special Decorative Arts Prize (Bilbao, 1928), and several prizes in Barcelona (1943, 1944, 1947 and 1950), Sabadell, Vic and Manresa in 1949, Sitges in 1950 and Lérida in 1957. He also won the Prize of Honour at the International Exhibition held in Madrid in 1953 for a glass goblet. It is said that his pieces were unique, as he destroyed the preparatory drawings and, if he was not entirely satisfied with the result, even the glass piece itself. His production continued until 1960, and later his workshop continued to be run by his daughter and son-in-law, albeit in a more industrial manner. His works are to be found in numerous collections.
