Description
MARIUS ERNEST SABINO, France, ca.1930.
Art Deco box.
Moulded and carved glass with scene of mermaids.
Signed "Sabino, France" on the side.
Measures: 4,5 x 20 x 20 cm.
Box made of moulded glass, carved on the lid with a scene of mermaids, where the glass acquires opalescent qualities.
Of Sicilian origin, Marius Ernest Sabino (1878-1961) trained at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, where he was particularly interested in the new applications of glass. After the First World War, after returning from the front, he founded his own manufacture. Interested in both the artistic and technical aspects of glass production, he developed innovative techniques in both construction and decoration, producing mainly moulded pieces with relief decorations. From the 1920s onwards he produced both official commissions and vases and other ornamental pieces, where his quality as a sculptor is evident. Sabino also exhibited his work at the Paris Salons and a large illuminated column at the Universal Exhibition of 1937. After the Second World War, Marius Sabino continued to run the factory, although he stopped making new designs.
