Description
A NASA portrait photograph of American astronaut John W. Young (1930-2018), signed and inscribed in black felt tip marker, as "To: Corbin, Eric + Karl Jr. / With Best Wishes, / John Young" at upper right. N.d., n.p. The NASA image, (JSCIL-388A), is known as Young's "Blue Jumpsuit" portrait to differentiate it from other NASA portraits in which Young is dressed in a suit. In brilliant matte color. The NASA logo and copyright information is printed verso. A few gentle surface wrinkles found especially along the right edge, else near fine. 8" x 10."
John W. Young became one of the most seasoned astronauts of his NASA cohort, flying six different space missions in three classes of spacecraft--Gemini, Apollo, and the Space Shuttle--and spending a cumulative 34 days in outer space. Young served as Pilot and Command Pilot respectively during the March 23, 1965 Gemini 3 and July 18, 1966 Gemini 10 space missions. He served as Command Module Pilot during Apollo 10 mission, the so-called "dress rehearsal" for the triumphant moon-landing two months later, and officially became both a Commander and a "moonwalker" himself during the Apollo 16 mission in April 1972. Lastly, Young served as Commander during two Space Shuttle Columbia missions, 1 and 9, in April 1981 and December 1983 respectively. Young retired from NASA in 2004.
