Anthony writes to her friend, Teresa W. Kingsley, in full, “Your letter of January 18th, inviting me to address your Federation for the education and organization of Western New York, is before me. I think I must have written you at that time that it was impossible for me to accept, because I must very soon leave for Washington. I hope you had at your meeting, a large audience and good papers. / I enclose a few souvenirs of my birthday celebration in Washington. / I trust all the women connected with your literary and educational conference, are interested in the question of woman’s enfranchisement, and that you all belong to the suffrage clubs of your respective towns.” Anthony then adds a postscript, “I have sent souvenirs to all of your officers.”

The birthday to which Anthony refers is her 80th, which was celebrated in the White House (then known as the Executive Mansion) at the invitation of President William McKinley.

Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) was an American social reformer and women's rights activist who played a pivotal role in the women's suffrage movement. She was president of (1892-1900) of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, which she founded with Elizabeth Cady Stanton. In 1872, Anthony was arrested in her hometown of Rochester, New York for voting in violation of laws that allowed only men to vote. She was convicted in a widely publicized trial. Although she refused to pay the fine, the authorities declined to take further action. In 1878, Anthony and Stanton arranged for Congress to be presented with an amendment giving women the right to vote. Introduced by Senator Aaron A. Sargent (R-CA), it was eventually ratified as the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920, and later became known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment. Anthony traveled extensively in support of women's suffrage, giving as many as 75 to 100 speeches per year and working on many state campaigns. On July 2, 1979, she became the first woman to be featured on a circulating coin from the U.S. Mint.
