Colonial Rhode Island Nine Pence Note, 1786
1p, measuring 2.75" x 4", Newport, Rhode Island, dated May 1786. A printed currency note, No. 5301, equal to "NINE PENCE' in Lawful Silver Money." Decorated with an ornate leaf border with two large birds at the top, along with an anchor surrounded by the inscription DOMINE SPERAMUS IN TE. Signed at the bottom "N. Knight" and "J Hazard". With faint toning and foxing throughout. Slightly uneven edges. Boldly signed.
A colonial currency note, dating from the May 1786 sessions, the piece is an excellent example of paper currency printed just before the Federal government was formed under the Constitution.
