Description

Early Colonial Rhode Island Land Indenture, 1738

1p, measuring 12" x 12.75", Providence, Rhode Island, dated January 26, 1738. An indenture between John Clark and the Trustees appointed by the Colony - John Wanton, George Goulding, Jahleel Brenton, Daniel Updike, John Gardner, and James Sheffield. The contract states that £75 was paid to Clark for "one certain parcel or peace [sic] of Land…Lying and being within the Township of Providence aforesaid containing Twenty-three acres…" Signed and sealed by John Clark, before Ezekiel Warner. With docketing on the verso that states that the Deed was cancelled on November 20, 1779, signed by the Town Clerk. The document has flattened folds, with uneven toning, soiling, and foxing throughout. Uneven edges with some loss at the corners. Boldly signed.

The Trustees appointed by the colony include numerous notable Rhode Island figures. John Wanton (1672-1740) was governor of the colony for six consecutive terms, from 1734-1740, and two of his nephews were also later governors of the colony. Daniel Updike (1694-1757) served as Attorney General of Rhode Island for many years and was involved in resolving the border dispute with Massachusetts. John Gardner (1697-1764) served as deputy governor and was Chief Justice of the colony's Superior Court. And James Sheffield Sr. (1692-1762) was captain of Fort George before being elected to audit the accounts on the Committee of War in 1757.
