Description
239 cid flathead V8, 100 HP @ 3800 RPM, three-speed manual transmission, floating axle, leaf springs, hydraulic drum brakes; wheelbase: 118” It’s no wonder that the post-war GIs returning from World War II were “crazy ‘bout a Mercury” – they were fast and flashy, easy to find speed parts for, and could run with anything produced immediately post-war. First built in 1941, and interrupted by wartime military production, the 1948 Mercurys were very similar in design to the 1947 models. They were capably powered by the Mercury 239 cubic inch V8 engine, which by 1948 was capable of producing 100 horsepower at 3800 RPM. A three-speed manual was the standard transmission, and there were four body styles to select from: a Station Wagon, Convertible, Town Sedan, and a Sedan Coupe. With over 50,000 produced in a shortened 1948 production year, the Mercurys were successful in differentiating themselves from their Ford brethren, and represent one of the most desirable automotive designs of the ‘40s. This beautiful maroon Convertible was owned by a dedicated hobbyist for over 30 years. He was both an AACA and an Early Ford V-8 Club member, and was a lifelong car enthusiast. His cars were always kept in meticulous bone-stock condition, using only NOS parts for any restoration. This lovely Mercury Convertible has always been stored in a heated garage, and driven sparingly for shows and special events. It is very well maintained, kept immaculately clean, and runs and drives almost as a new Mercury fresh from the showroom would. The maroon paint shows well, with a deep shine that only comes from a high quality application. The interior is completely stock and in very nice shape, and the engine compartment shows the care this Mercury has received. Equipped with an AM radio, clock, and whitewall tires, it’s an honest car with no apparent previous damage or issues whatsoever. When it seems like all the good Mercs were chopped and lowered into customs and hot rods, you can rest assured that this car has been simply taken care of and enjoyed just as it left Dearborn. It is a pleasure to discover good, clean Mercurys from the ‘40s, especially cars with careful, long term ownership like this example. Be sure to give a second look to this highly original Mercury Convertible, as it’s rare to find these in such a fine, pristine, stock condition.
