Rare and desirable map of central New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania during the American Revolutionary War drawn by Joseph Yeager for John Marshall’s 1832 edition of The Life of Washington. “Map of the Country from Raritan River in East Jersey to Elk Head in Maryland Shewing the several Operations of the American & British Armies in 1776 & 1777.” Covers both sides of the Delaware River from Alexandria, Sandy Hook and Staten Island south past Philadelphia and Trenton to Delaware and Maryland. Shows sites of important battles with the alignment of troops, major roads and various towns. Original hand coloring. Color coded to show the positions of the British (red) and American (blue) troops. The map was prepared to show the important Middle Atlantic theater of the war. The map documents the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Trenton, Paoli, Princeton and Monmouth. Original source for the map was John Hills, who accompanied the British army as a cartographer. The 1832 edition of Marshall’s work are more notable and desirable than the earlier 1824 edition because of the hand coloring. Some ghosting and light soiling. 6.5 x 9.375
