Description
At the top of the map is written: "A Topographical Map of Hudsons River, with the Channels Depth of Water, Rocks, Shoals, &c. and the Country Adjacent, from Sandy-Hook, New York and Bay to Fort Edward, also the Communication with Canada by Lake George and Lake Champlain, as high as Fort Chambly on Sorel River." It is a hand colored topographical cartography engraving, engraved and published by William Faden (English, 1749-1836), titled and inscribed at upper center "By Claude Joseph Sauthier, on the Original Scale of Four Miles to One Inch." and "Engraved by William Faden Charing Crofs." In addition to the hand-coloration and in-depth descriptions of the depths of the river, notes have been made indicating military skirmishes and locations of import to the war effort. Originally printed October 1, 1776, as indicated by the note beneath the map, but notations made within are dated October 11, 1776.
