Description
1899 Last Days of Pompeii ROME Bulwer-Lytton Mount Vesuvius Illustrated 2v SET
Edward Bulwer-Lytton was a 19th-century English novelist and playwright known for his now cliché opening line “it was a dark and stormy night.” One of his best works was The Last Days of Pompeii, a historical novel on the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 and how it destroyed the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. The work provides insight into daily Roman life in the 1st-century through the eyes of a Greek man. Bulwer-Lytton was a popular figure among many esoteric circles in his day, mainly because of the contents of many of his writings. The Last Days of Pompeii displays his interest in these occult themes by featuring the Witch of Vesuvius, who predicts coming disaster, and the cult of Isis. Since its publication, the novel has seen numerous theatrical and film adaptations.
This 1899 American edition was published by Rand and McNally and features exquisite full-page engravings.
