USS ARIZONA SAILORS CAP AND TALLY
USS ARIZONA SAILORS CAP AND TALLY
Item Details
Description
A very rare original U.S. Navy sailors cap attributed to the famous USS ARIZONA which was sunk during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The cap is constructed of blue wool with leather sweat band and crown guard, likely circa 1920s or 30s, maker unknown, with black cap tally around the rim that reads in gilded letters on the front 'USS ARIZONA.' Inscribed on the leather sweat band is 'John W. Parrish, USS Arizona, San Pedro Calif.' Lightly worn, expected due to age, else fine condition. The Arizona's home port was in San Pedro California from 1921 until 1940 when it was moved with the rest of the Pacific Fleet to Pearl Harbor as a deterrent in response to Japanese imperialism. It would be sunk during the attack on December 7, 1941, after its hull was pierced by a Japanese bomb which detonated one of its ammunition magazines.
