Fine group of four letters and documents pertaining to Capr. FRANCIS LEWIS of the Nova Scotia Fencibles, heavily engaged at the Battle of Sacket's Harbor on April 27, 1813. The grouping includes: FRANCIS LEWIS A.L.S., 1p. 4to. to Capt. Thomas Maling, Horse Guards, Fort Townshend, St. Johns. Newfoundland, July 7, 1812 seeking his help in obtaining the vacant position of Fort Major and describing the various promotions and postings that have taking place since the arrival of the King's Vessel from Halifax to 'announce American War', seal tear removing several letters; Petition (or retained copy) from Lewis, 2pp. 4to. [n.p., n.d.], describing the extensive service record of his family and their numerous misfortunes including the loss of all the family baggage and papers to 'the Pike, American Privateer', and seeking compensation; A.L.S. by J. Steward, Deputy Paymaster General, to Walter Lewis (son of Francis) in London, 2pp. 4to., London, Jan. 19, 1814 warning him of his father's ill health and poor circumstances in Nova Scotia, mentioning that Gen. Moore may help and offering to testify on his behalf; and petition of Philadelphia Lewis, widow of Francis Lewis, 2pp. legal folio, [n.p., n.d.] to the Secretary for War describing the career and sterling service of her late husband, from an ensign in the Leicester Fencibles in 1794 to a captain in the 102nd. Regt. in 1807, his transfer into the Nova Scotia Fencibles after a disastrous posting to New South Wales ('he found the Colony in a state of rebellion'), etc., she being left destitute with five young children 'under the distressing circumstance of having been plundered by an American privateer' and asking for financial assistance.
