Late Eastern Roman Glass Pitcher
Late Eastern Roman Glass Pitcher
Item Details
Description
Roman, late Imperial Period, Eastern Empire, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A gorgeous pitcher hand blown from translucent, olivine-hued glass to present a piriform body with an elongated neck, a rolled rim, and a pinched spout, all sitting upon a ring-shaped foot. A slender handle connects the base of the neck to the verso of the spout, ending in an upward-pointed embellishment. The neck is adorned by a slender trail that wraps around 6 times, while an interior rib travels horizontally across the shoulder, topped by an undulating, etched design. A relief of diagonal striations additionally embellishes the foot. Size: 2" Diameter x 5.2" H (5.1 cm x 13.2 cm)

#139517
Condition
Losses in some minor areas of trailing and small part of interior rib on shoulder. Some expected nicks. Otherwise, excellent with light weathering film and feint iridescence. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
