Extremely unique monumental oil painting of the Aveline Hotel Fire that occurred on May 3, 1908 in Fort Wayne, Indiana believed to be by Elmer Stewart (1876-1962) who was active in Indiana at the time. Elmer Stewart is said to have painted around 60 paintings during his career. Oil canvas. Signed lower left. Painting is almost identical to the famous postcard of the fire but the painting seems to occur sightly after the fire timeframe captured on the postcard. See records and images. Depicts steam fire engine crews battling from street level, flames in nearly every window, the roof breeched.What looks like an angel burning on the roof as well as other subtle things seen in portions of the painting. Framed in modern dark ogee with gold liner Monumental in size, painting measures by size approximately 47.5 inches wide by 32.5 inches high. Outside frame approximately 55.5 inches by 40.5 inches.
