Description
Two photographs, handed down in a family that had lived in China in the 19th century, one showing the front of an imposing western style building, the yard enclosed by a bamboo fence and planted with banana trees, a large oval sign over the door with the US seal and the word "Consulate" visible. On the steps and in the shadows of the lower floor portico can be seen the chinese staff. On the upper balconies can be seen an American gentleman, a little girl and woman who are likely his wife and daughter, and a Chinese woman, likely an attendant. The second photograph is a close up of the front door of the same edifice, before which stands the American gentleman, a large chrysanthemum in his buttonhole, with four Chinese gentlemen and an ornate wicker chair. Exceptionally clear images with excellent contrast, handsomely framed. Frames, approx. 16 3/4' x 14".
