Lithographed view on top half of the 1st page of a 4-page letter sheet. Gray wove paper. 27x21 cm (10¼x8¼").
View with harbor at left, sailing vessels, famous grounded store ships, wharves, etc. (Issued before September 26, 1850. Artist James Gilchrist Swann (1818-1900) of Medford, Massachusetts, worked as a ship chandler before coming to California in 1850. With letter written on the lower portion of the first page and the top half of the second page, to Purdett (or Burdett?) Hyatt from his "fond Father," dated San Francisco, November 15th, 1850. In part: "I promised you, I would send a picture of this City. Your goodness in writing a letter to your Papa... is deserving of this little present for your 'Christmas' & 'New Years.'" The rest of the letter is of family matters - evidently the "fond Father" did not feel comfortable writing his young son about the vibrant society of sinful San Francisco. Addressed on p.4. Baird 316.
