Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel of a charming form depicting a recumbent dog laying with its legs stretched out to one side. The highly burnished canine features a coffee-brown body decorated with large white spots, a conical spout atop the hind legs, and a stirrup-shaped strap handle arching from the spout to the raised head. The alert countenance is composed of almond-shaped eyes with brown pupils, a tapered snout with delineated nostrils, a bared mouth with rows of fangs, and a pair of perky ears. Size: 5.4" L x 2.6" W x 4.125" H (13.7 cm x 6.6 cm x 10.5 cm)

Minor abrasions to base, body, handle, and spout, with light fading to original pigment, and 1 stable hairline fissure on belly between forelegs and hind legs, otherwise intact and very good. Great remains of pigment throughout.
