Die "Underweysung der Messung" war das erste mathematische Buch in deutscher Sprache. Das Werk wurde erstmals 1525 in Nürnberg auf Deutsch veröffentlicht. Die vorliegende erste lateinische Ausgabe ist jedoch viel seltener als diese Erstausgabe. Dürer erläutert die Anwendung der praktischen Geometrie auf Zeichnungen und Gemälde: "Diese Methoden sollten auf die Architektur, die Malerei, die Schrift (Dürer entwarf sowohl römische als auch gotische Buchstaben) und die ornamentalen Formen im Allgemeinen angewandt werden... in der Veranschaulichung dieser Prinzipien liegt die große historische Bedeutung von Dürers theoretischen Schriften... sie waren die Grundlage des akzeptierten ästhetischen Dogmas bis ins neunzehnte Jahrhundert" (PMM).
