Description
Ancient Southeast Asia, Vietnam, Dong Son culture, ca. 1000 BCE to 100 CE. A collection of 3 ancient mold-cast bronze and leaded-bronze bells. The largest is leaded-bronze cast as an orb-shaped body with a large slit along the bottom for emitting sounds, and the metal clapper ball is still present, making a rattling noise. At the top is a suspension loop, and the surface is covered with a rich green patina. The matching pair of bells have an elongated acorn shape with linear slits and remains of the original clapper pellets inside. The surface of these have developed a stunning blue color from oxidation! The Dong Son (or Dongson) culture thrived in northern Vietnam and its burials, rich in bronze goods, demonstrate a high level of wealth relative to neighboring areas. Size (large green bell): 2.75" L x 2.25" W (7 cm x 5.7 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand; (pair of bells): 1.75" L x 1" W (4.4 cm x 2.5 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
