Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A wonderful blackware jar, mold-made to present a circular body adorned with elaborate relief decoration. Sitting upon a planar base, the ancient vessel exhibits convex walls topped by a narrow neck and a gently flared rim. Each side of the dish is embellished by nearly identical images of a striding figure in profile facing right and carrying a club over his shoulder enveloped by a stippled field. A giant headdress crowns his head, comprised of a hemispherical cap with 4 extending zoomorph necks that arch outwards and terminate in deer-like heads. The shoulder of the jar is additionally decorated by a crouching monkey who gazes outwards and hugs the neck of the vessel, his sinuous tail draping down the body.
