Description
Native American, North America, southeastern United States, Eastern Woodland culture, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A sturdy hand axe that is carved from mottled beige stone with green, dark gray, citrine, and black inclusions. The tool features a tapered butt end, a carved groove that encircles the entire midsection - hence the name "full groove axe head" - and a thick blade that narrows to form an acute blade edge. The blade edge exhibits remarkably smooth surfaces that indicate how this was perhaps used more for smoothing and shaping wood or softer materials rather than chipping away at softer types of stone. Size: 10.5" L x 4.5" W (26.7 cm x 11.4 cm)
