Description
Native American, Midwestern to Eastern United States, Eastern Woodland, Archaic period, ca. 5000 to 3000 BCE. A hand-pecked diorite stone axe head with a double headed form, and a groove that encircles the entire circumference, hence the designation: "full groove axe head." The groove has raised ridges along the edge. The blades and ridges are nearly perfect, with minimum wear- the blades suggesting this pretty mottled stone had a ritualistic use rather than utilitarian. Size: 4.75" L x 2.5" W (12.1 cm x 6.4 cm)
