Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, Islamic culture, ca. late 19th to 20th century CE. This is a lovely wheel thrown pottery bowl with a vibrant hand painted geometric motif inside the basin. The shallow bowl rests on a ring foot base, which is pierced for suspension - these bowls traditionally double as decorative art when not in use. The surface is glazed a beige white and then covered in solid turquoise, cobalt blue, saffron yellow, and maroon hues with outlines in black. This vibrant program of linear, floral, and geometric motifs that combine a blend of Islamic, Spanish, and tribal Berber patterns. Size: 14.125" Diameter x 3" H (35.9 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
