Item Details
Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A large Fassi style pottery serving bowl hand glazed with a stunning blue-on-white patterns. The vessel rests on a ring foot that has a drilled hole through the rim which enabled the bowl to be hung and displayed when not in use. The exterior walls are completely white, reserving the main decoration for the shallow basin. The broad rim and interior boast the vibrant program of linear, floral, and geometric motifs that combine a blend of Islamic, Spanish, and tribal Berber patterns. The Fez region is renowned for their Fassi pottery that uses cobalt blue pigments. Size: 14.5" Diameter x 4" H (36.8 cm x 10.2 cm)

Condition
The white glaze is taking on a yellow hue which may have been due to exposure to some mineral during firing. Bubbles and glaze blisters across entire interior and exterior of bowl from glazing / firing. Glaze blisters occur much more frequently in hand-made items. Modern Metal wire attached to foot for hanging.
