Description
Beautifully composed and large full plate albumen photograph of Lt. Henry Ulmer of the 6th Ohio, a regiment formed to defend Cincinnati at the onset of hostilities. Ulmer was a former "49-er" and prominent businessman before and after the war. Dressed resplendently in his uniform complete with gold epaulettes, Ulmer cradles an officer’s sword and gazes off camera in an artistic pose.
A label pasted to the top left corner of the reverse of the mount indicates this photo was struck at Porter & Hoag’s Gallery in Cincinnati. Reverse is also signed in period ink: “Uniformly Yours, H. C. Ulmer," a tongue-in-cheek reference to his appearance in uniform. Image is in excellent condition with great tonality and clarity.
[Civil War, Union, Confederate] [19th Century Photography, Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, Tintype, CDV, carte-de-visite, albumen, cabinet card]
