Description
Fantastic original albumen photograph of the 144th New York Infantry “in line of battle." This is an interesting landscape view of what appears to be the entire regiment, shoulder to shoulder, as they would appear when marching into a fight. The location is unknown, but the regiment seems to be on a flat grassy area with hills looming in the background. A period ink inscription under the photo reads, “The 144th Rgt. N.Y. Volunteers in line of Battle.” Another note written in pencil on the reverse reads, “Regiment raised in Delaware Co. William Henry Stone was Captain of Co. H.” Stone enlisted in the 144th New York Infantry as a Captain and was indeed put in charge of Company "H." About a year later, he would die of disease at a hospital in Griffin’s Corners, New York. During his time in the service, Stone would have spent the balance of his days in the defense of Washington, D.C. and near Suffolk, Virginia. It is possible this albumen was made during that time and kept by the family after his death.
Excellent condition with strong contrast.
