Item Details
Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Four Corners region, New Mexico, Chaco Canyon area, Ancestral Puebloan, ca. 900 to 1030 CE. A fine and large hand-built olla vessel with a corrugated neck. This olla has a rounded base, meaning it was probably made to be placed into a sandy or earthen floor to stand upright, perhaps used for preparation, cooking, or storage. The bulbous body swells out and up to a broad neck decorated with corrugated coils that are slightly flattened across the exterior surface from shoulder to rim. The rest of the vessel was also made using the coil method but scraped and completely smooth without corrugation. Size: 11" Diameter x 14" H (27.9 cm x 35.6 cm); 16" H (40.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: Private Vero Beach, Florida, USA collection, acquired from Morning Star Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA in 2000
