Description
Kitagawa Utamaro (1753 - 1806), Japanese, Woodblock of Awabatori Abolone Divers, circa 1797, Triptych of a series of Women's Handworks. Comes in very nice wood frame with woodblock under mat and glass. Many woodblocks of Kitagawa were glued to surfaces and/or faded over time. One of three in series up for auction, the image is crisp. Image depicts two women by the sea. Black stamps and print writing seen on right side of image. Considered one of the best Japanese designers of paintings and ukiyo-e woodblock prints of his time, it is said that Utamaro did close to 2000 prints. Kitagawa was arrested in 1804 for making illegal prints of Toyotomi Hideyosh, a 16th Century military ruler. After serving 50 days in prison, Utamaro died two years later. Provenance: Obtained by prior owner from Centaur Sculpture Galleries in Las Vegas in 2010. Receipt shows price of $449 plus tax (See images). Very crisp Woodblock in very Nice frame. No fading. floating in frame. Comes with paperwork as noted in description.
