Description
An etched and gilt officer's morion of a German cooper's guild, circa 1580
The heavy skull forged in two pieces, with a tall, toothed comb. Continuous lining rivets with brass rosettes. The narrow, tapering brim with a turned edge. The entire surface with finely etched decorative tendrils on a gilt background. The guild sign of the coopers on the comb, both sides of the skull with a representation of the guild sign, flanked by two goats. Height 31.5 cm.
During the late Middle Ages and early modern period, the defence of German towns was also organised with the help of the guilds, each of which was obliged to provide a certain number of able-bodied men with the necessary equipment.
Identical helmets can be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York (28.195.1) and the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. They are attributed to the cooper's guild in city of Cologne.
