Description
Winterhalder and Hofmeier Nine Tubular Bell Tall Case Clock, circa 1900
With eight-day movement, moon phase dial, mahogany case. Three melodies: Westminster, Lichfield and Whittington. The battleship in the moon dial is a rare and unusual feature. The clock face is hand-engraved brass with a silvered chapter ring. There is a seconds bit and one can turn off the chimes, and or the strike. The clock plays one of the three chimes on the quarters and then strikes the hour on nickel-plated brass tubes. The clock is of eight days duration and was recently professionally overhauled.
The Winterhalder Hofmeier Clock Company was established in Neustadt-Schwarzenbach, Friedenweiler, Germany where they produced timepieces of exceptional quality for worldwide distribution. With the 1929 crash of the New York Stock Exchange, the company lost their assets and production ceased in 1937.
This clock was originally purchased by Harvey Beffa, the well-known chairman of Falstaff Brewery, St. Louis.
