Description
A very fine antique rare Turkmen Silk and Wool Tekke Juval with three large Salor Guls. First quarter of 19th century. Handwoven in silk and wool, with numerous design details depicted throughout the weave. Hand knotted in high quality blue and cochineal silk thread, all over. The field depicts three large Salor guls, with six further half guls edging the field top and bottom, all interspersed with secondary guls shaped in cruciform stepped polygons, encircled by eight stars. This old Tekke Juval, with Salor influence in its ornamentation, is a decorative masterpiece by the Akhal Tekke people. An extraordinarily fine weave using an ‘asymmetrical knot open to the right’, it has a slightly depressed structure and is soft and cloth-like in its handling. This shade of red seen in the field is a characteristic of Tekke weavings and differs from the red used by the Salor. Size: 117 cms x 70 cms (3ft 8 ins x 2 ft 2 ins). Please note: this Lot can be viewed in person at The Oriental Rug Gallery Ltd 82 Wey Hill, Haslemere, Surrey GU27 1HS in the UK by Appointment Only - 10am to 4pm from 22nd to 24th of May inclusive, and will ship from this UK address.
