ATTRIBUTED TO HATTORI TADASABURO (DIED 1939)
A Cloisonné-Enamel Suzuribako (Box for Writing Utensils) and Cover
Taisho (1912-1926) or Showa (1926-1989) era, early 20th century
Worked entirely in musen (wireless) wire, the kabusebuta (overlapping) cover inset with a square plaque decorated with a sugi (cedar) grove partially concealed in the mist on a light grey ground, the inside of the cover with a stag at the foot of a mountain, the sides of the cover, the box and underside of polished wood, the inside of the box fitted with a removable ita (baseboard) and tray containing the suzuri (ink-grinding stone), unsigned; with a wood tomobako storage box inscribed inside the lid Suzuribako with an oval red seal and signed Shippo Korin tsukuru with a round seal Korin. 4.5cm x 19.5cm 22cm (1¾in x 7 5/8in x 8 5/8in). Including not limited to the following:

Exterior of cover: cloisonné-enamel good condition. Surrounding wood border cracked at each corner at around 3cm and also slightly chipped.

Interior of cover: inside top corner with a discoloured star crack of approx., 5cm.

Interior of box: interior baseboard with a vertical crack of approx. 5.5cm along the bottom; the underside of baseboard slightly chipped at the shorter edge. Each corner of the box cracked along each corner, the wood panel on the base moved due to temperature change resulting in a gap along one side.

The removable wood implement tray signed Takasugu tsukuru; slightly cracked in places.
