Item Details

Description

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A dainty free-blown glass vessel, known as an ampulla, that sits on a small concave base with a globular body, a narrow neck, and a flared lip. From the shoulder to the base is applied trailing that forms woven lattice shapes. The delicate ampulla has areas of glistening aqua that gleam through the weathering film. A fine example of Roman artistry with glass! Size: 2.25" W x 3" H (5.7 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

Condition

Surface weathering and stable crack to rim. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Small bulge to the rim from blowing process. Great applied trailing.
