Description
Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A lovely gathering of 3 fragmentary textiles that are tightly woven from natural cotton or camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of marigold, burnt umber, chocolate, coral, fuchsia, crimson, and wheat. The first fragment is of rectangular form and features 2 pairs of red-tipped feathers enclosed within 3 sets of inversely corresponding cresting waves. The second fragment has registers of abstract zoomorphic creatures, perhaps felines, beneath several avian-adorned tassels. The largest mantle fragment exhibits a program of polychrome birds enclosed within horizontal registers of inversely corresponding stepped motifs, all above several yellow-hued fringe tassels. Size of largest (fringed mantle w/ birds): 14.25" L x 4.25" W (36.2 cm x 10.8 cm); (frame): 19" W x 22.1" H (48.3 cm x 56.1 cm)
