Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua, Carretas, Casas Grandes, ca. 1060 to 1340 CE. A hand-built pottery jar of bulbous form and tan coloration decorated with attractive motifs in red and black. The vessel exhibits a round but stable base, a carinated body with a sloped shoulder, and a petite, flared rim. The exterior surfaces are made smooth via fine burnishing marks and have intricate linear and geometric motifs in red and black hues across the upper body. A pair of drilled suspension holes on either side of the rim enabled the vessel to either have a lid secured to the top or to be suspended off the ground when not in use. Size: 7.5" Diameter x 5.875" H (19 cm x 14.9 cm)

Provenance: private South Carolina, USA collection
