South American, Upper / Western Amazon Basin, Ucayali River, Peru, Shipibo people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A wonderful, hand-built pottery jar of a squat form featuring impressively thin walls that rise to a gradually widening lower body beneath a carinated midsection, a broad hip, a tapered shoulder, and an annular rim, all sitting upon a concave base. Enveloped in a creamy beige slip, the top half of the exterior boasts a mesmerizing pattern of burnt orange and black linear striations and interlocking, geometric motifs, flanked by black horizontal bands. Alternatively, the interior, bottom half, and the base are painted a rich hue of russet. Size: 12.3" Diameter x 2" H (31.2 cm x 5.1 cm)
