Renaissance Revival Gold and Limoges Enamel Pendant, depicting Esther and Ahasuerus, signed S.C., approx. 47 x 36 mm, and set in a gold and enamel frame with rose-cut diamonds, pearl drops, reverse with compartment, lg. 4 1/4 in.
Note: The S.C. signature could be for Suzanne de Court or her workshop. de Court was a prominent enamel painter in Limoges, active c. 1600, and ran a sizeable workshop which produced very high-quality enamels. The scene here is typical of the work she and her shop produced, often depicting religious or mythological subjects. Her work is in several museums worldwide, including the British Museum, the Frick Collection, the Princeton University Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.

Condition: Large areas of enamel loss to figures, standing soldier at right and kneeling king at left. Various other spots of loss, surface scratches. Frame with minor spots of enamel loss. Pearls not tested for origin.
