Description
A slice of a pallasite meteorite from the Atacama Desert, Chile, found in 1822; showing an intermixture of iron and particularly fine segments of transparent to translucent mineral, probably olivine. 13 grams, 42 mm. (1 3/4"). Ex Douglas Rose collection; ex David Baker collection (with label). Pallasites consist of centimeter-sized olivine crystals of peridot quality in an iron-nickel matrix and were once thought to originate at the core-mantle boundary of differentiated asteroids that were subsequently shattered through impacts. An alternative recent hypothesis is that they are impact-generated mixtures of core and mantle materials.[No Reserve]
