A creepy guy craps out with his crush, dies, and then rises from the grave to harass her from beyond: "Anne's beauty has beckoned me from the horrors of death! She'll be MINE now!"

Sex scenarios involving the living and the dead were widespread in pre-Code horror comics (see, for instance, Chamber of Chills #23 and Weird Mysteries #12 in this sale). Besides gross-out appeal, why did visuals like this prove popular in the straightlaced 1950s? In the bygone era of arranged marriages, fairy tales like "Beauty and the Beast" helped girls come to terms with forced betrothals: as fairy tale anthologist Marie Tatar observed, "Many an arranged marriage must have felt like being tethered to a monster.... an alliance that required effacing [one's] own desires and submitting to the will of a monster." Similarly, horror comics featuring insatiable stiffs may have offered cold comfort to kids fearful of sacrificing themselves to the demands and expectations of their elders (and let's face it, to a child or teen anyone over 30 might as well be a walking corpse).
